Life in UK Made Easy

Privacy policy

Last updated 9 October 2026.

This policy explains what the iPhone app Life in UK Made Easy collects, why, and what you can do about it. It is written in plain English. If anything is unclear, email us and we will explain it.

Who we are

Life in UK Made Easy (the same name on the App Store) is published by Gaurav Dewan, an independent developer. The app's bundle identifier is com.eighteen.lifeinuk. For UK data protection law we are the data controller for the data described below. You can reach us at hello@somewherein.city.

What we collect

We do not ask for your postal address or your phone number. We ask for your name and your email address in only two cases, both your choice: if you choose the test-share plan (see Test-share plan), and if you claim the Pass Guarantee (see Pass Guarantee claims). You do not create a login. When you first open the app it creates an anonymous account, which is only a random identifier. Here is everything we store.

DataPurposeWhere it is storedHow long
Anonymous account identifier (a Firebase user ID) To keep your progress together on one account, without asking you to register Firebase Authentication and Cloud Firestore Until you delete your account
Your answers: question identifier, the answer you chose, whether it was right, the difficulty level, the chapter, the attempt number and the time To work out your readiness score and show what to study next Cloud Firestore, under users/{your id}/attempts Until you delete your account
Study progress, mock test runs, your answers in the welcome tour and your in-app settings So you can carry on where you stopped and see your results again Cloud Firestore, under users/{your id}/…, and on your iPhone Until you delete your account
Your test date, if you give it To remind you the day after your test and ask for your test report Cloud Firestore, under users/{your id}, and on your iPhone Until you delete your account
Your name and email address, only if you choose the test-share plan To contact you about your test, to ask which questions you were asked Cloud Firestore, under users/{your id}, and on your iPhone Until you delete your account
Test reports you choose to send: your test date, your score out of 24, the questions you remember (picked in the app or typed by you), how hard each one felt, any notes you type, the app version and the time To count which questions people get in the test in 2026, and show those totals to everyone who uses the app Cloud Firestore, in a separate reports collection, with your anonymous account identifier No fixed end date. Deleting your account does not delete reports you have already sent. See Test reports
Usage events: which screens you open, which buttons you tap, when you finish a mock test To see which parts of the app help people pass, and fix the parts that do not Mixpanel, EU data residency On by default, switch off in Settings. See the next section
Subscription status (whether full access is active, and whether you are in the free trial) To know whether you have a paid plan Apple; the result (whether you have a plan) is held on your iPhone and copied to your profile on Google Firebase While the subscription lasts

We do not collect your contacts, your location, your health data, your payment card details or an advertising identifier. We do not collect your photos, except a photo of your test result that you choose to send with a Pass Guarantee claim. The app does not show adverts.

Your test date

If you choose the test-share plan, the app asks for the date of your Life in the UK test. (Earlier versions of the app asked for it in the welcome tour.) We use it to remind you the day after your test and to ask you about your test. It is kept on your iPhone and in your profile in our database.

Test-share plan

The test-share plan is a cheaper weekly subscription for people who agree to tell us which questions they were asked in their real test. After you buy it, the app asks for your name, your email address and your test date. Apple does not give us the email address of people who buy a subscription, so this is the only way we can contact you. We use your name and email address only to ask about your test. We never use them for marketing, we never share them, and we never send them to our analytics. They are deleted when you delete your account.

Test reports

After your test, the app asks you to share the questions you got. Sending a report is your choice. A report holds:

We use reports to count how often each question is asked in 2026. The app shows these counts to everyone who uses it, for example how many people reported a question, and the questions asked most this month. Other users only ever see totals. They never see your report, your score or your notes.

The developer reads the questions and notes that people type, to find questions that are missing from the app and add them. Please do not type your name, your phone number, your address or any other personal details in these boxes.

A report is stored in our database (Google Cloud Firestore) with your anonymous account identifier. It does not hold your name. After a report is sent, no phone can read it, not even yours.

Analytics

Usage analytics are switched on by default. We use Mixpanel, with its servers in the European Union.

We collect which screens you use, which questions you answer and whether you got them right, your mock test scores, and the steps you take when you buy a subscription. When you set your test date, Mixpanel receives only how many days away it is, not the date. When you send a test report, Mixpanel receives only how many questions it holds and your score. Mixpanel never receives the text you type.

These events are linked to your anonymous account identifier, so we can see that one person used several screens in a row. They are never linked to your name or your email address, even if you have given them to us.

You can turn analytics off at any time: tap the menu button at the top of the Home screen, then Usage Data in Settings. Collection stops from that moment.

Our lawful basis for analytics is our legitimate interest in understanding how the app is used so we can improve it. We have weighed that against your privacy: the data is pseudonymous, it is stored in the EU, and you can switch it off in the app at any time. For test reports our lawful basis is our legitimate interest in counting which questions people get in the test, so that we can show every user what to study. Sending a report is your choice, and the totals other users see never show who sent what. For everything else our lawful basis is the performance of our contract with you: without storing your answers and your test date the app cannot measure your readiness or plan your study, which is what it is for.

Purchases

Paid plans are auto-renewing subscriptions sold through Apple's App Store. The app shows the price and any free trial before you buy. Apple handles the payment. We never see your card number, your billing address or any other payment detail. The app only receives a yes-or-no answer from Apple about whether a subscription is active, and which one.

A subscription renews automatically until you cancel it. You cancel it in your iPhone Settings, under your Apple Account, then Subscriptions. Apple's own privacy policy covers what Apple does with your payment data.

Pass Guarantee claims

If you claim our Pass Guarantee, you send us your name, your email address, your test date and a copy of your test result from the app's Guarantee tab. The app stores them in Google Firebase (Cloud Firestore and Cloud Storage), where only we can read them. When a claim is approved we also ask for your bank details by email so we can pay you. These can include your name, email address, date of birth, test centre, test result and bank account details. We ask for these details only because you choose to claim.

We use them only to check and pay your claim (the legal basis is our contract with you: the guarantee). We do not share them. We check your claim against the mock test results of the same account in the app, and we use the documents only to decide your claim; they are never added to your analytics. If you delete your account in the app, your claim and its document are deleted too. We delete the result, your email address and bank details within 90 days after the claim is closed. We keep a short payment record (name, amount and date) for 6 years, because UK tax law requires it.

Data sharing

We do not sell your data and we never will. We share it only with the companies that run the app for us:

These companies act as our processors: they may only use the data to provide their service to us. There are no advertising networks in the app, no cross-app or cross-website tracking, and therefore no App Tracking Transparency prompt.

International transfers

Our Cloud Firestore database is located in the United Kingdom (London, region europe-west2), so your answers, progress, test date and test reports are stored in the UK. Mixpanel is configured to use its European Union data residency, so analytics events are stored in the EU. If a provider's support or backup functions involve access from outside the UK or the EEA, that provider's standard contractual clauses and equivalent safeguards apply.

Retention and deletion

We keep your data while you use the app, because it is what your readiness score is built from. There is no fixed expiry date; we do not want to erase your progress while you are still studying.

You can delete your account yourself at any time. Tap the menu button at the top of the Home screen, then Delete Account. This deletes your answers, your mock runs and your profile (including your test date, and your name and email address if you gave them) from our database, and then deletes the anonymous account itself. It also clears the copy held on your iPhone. It cannot be undone, and the app restarts as if it were new.

Deleting your account does not delete test reports you have already sent. They stay in our database with the anonymous identifier of the deleted account, and they stay in the totals that every user sees. The app no longer holds that identifier after the account is deleted. We have no fixed end date for test reports.

Deleting your account does not cancel your subscription: that belongs to Apple, and you cancel it in iPhone Settings. If you have not turned analytics off and want your analytics events removed as well, email us and we will ask Mixpanel to delete them.

Your rights

Under UK GDPR you have the right to:

To use any of these rights, email hello@somewherein.city. Because your account is anonymous, we have no way of matching a request to a person by name. Please send the request from the device that uses the app so we can identify the right account; without that we may not be able to find your data. Test reports carry only an anonymous identifier, so we may not be able to tell which reports are yours.

If you are not happy with how we handle your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office, the UK's data protection regulator: ico.org.uk, helpline 0303 123 1113. We would like the chance to put it right first.

Children

The app is made for adults preparing for the Life in the UK test. It is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect data from them. If you believe a child has used the app and left data with us, email us and we will delete it.

Changes

If we change what we collect or who we share it with, we will update this page and change the "last updated" date at the top. Significant changes will also be shown in the app.
